Admission of New Associates and Fellows

Applying for Membership as an Associate

Once you have completed all requirements for Associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (i.e., all three VEE requirements, Exams 1-7, and the CAS Course on Professionalism) and your credits for all the requirements are recorded with the CAS, you may submit an application for membership. [Submit your application for VEE credits as soon as possible as it requires processing time to verify information.]

The “ACAS” designation cannot be used until after you have submitted the membership application with the supporting materials, the CAS Executive Council has approved the application, and you have received a letter from the CAS president indicating that you have been approved by the Executive Council and that you may begin to use the “ACAS” designation.

New Associates will be officially recognized at a CAS Spring or Annual Meeting. Details will be provided in the letter from the CAS president.

The new membership package consists of the following materials (Forms are typeable.):

Application materials must be sent to:

    Danelle Gee
    Member Resource Center Manager
    Casualty Actuarial Society
    4350 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 250
    Arlington, VA 22203
    U.S.A.

References on your behalf by two members of the Casualty Actuarial Society are required. Obtaining the two references is your individual responsibility. You may wish to give copies of the instructions to the individuals providing the references. If there are no members of the CAS that are familiar with you and your work history, references from the American Academy of Actuaries, Society of Actuaries, or senior executives where you are employed may be substituted. For further information on alternate acceptable references, please contact Danelle Gee (DGee@casact.org). All letters of reference must be submitted on a confidential basis by the individual providing the reference and sent to the Member Resource Center Manager (see address above). The letters of reference must be received by the application deadline. Your application cannot be processed without the letters of reference.

All CAS members are bound by the CAS Constitution, CAS Bylaws, and the CAS Code of Professional Conduct. All three documents are linked from this page for your convenience. Other materials of interest to members, such as the CAS Online Directory and the CAS Strategic Plan are available on the CAS Web Site. To access the Members Only section of the CAS Web Site, please use your primary email address and password as indicated on the Biographical Questionnaire. Your password will be activated once your application has been approved by the Executive Council and you have been notified by the CAS Office.

Applying for Membership as a Fellow

  1. Current Associate

If you are currently an Associate of the CAS in good standing, no additional application is necessary for Fellowship. An Associate becomes a Fellow and may begin to use the FCAS designation immediately upon official notification of successful completion of all Fellowship requirements as prescribed by the Board of Directors (e.g., when you receive your official passing grade report). The CAS president will send the new Fellow an official confirmation letter.

New Fellows will be officially recognized at a CAS Spring or Annual Meeting. Details will be provided in the letter from the CAS president.

  2. Not an Associate

If you are not currently a member of the CAS but have completed all requirements for Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (i.e., all three VEE requirements, Exams 1-9, and the CAS Course on Professionalism) and your credits for all the requirements are recorded with the CAS, you may submit an application for membership.

The application process is the same as described above for Associates.

The “FCAS” designation cannot be used until after you have submitted the membership application with the supporting materials, the CAS Executive Council has approved the application, and you have received a letter from the CAS president indicating that you have been approved by the Executive Council and that you may begin to use the “FCAS” designation.
