Moderator: Emily A.Canelo, Esq., Zurich Reinsurance Centre, Inc.

Vinod Swami, Syntel

It is unknown how large the loss to society will be because computers all over the world are misinterpreting the year code "00" for the year 1900 instead of the year 2000. Based on the amount of information already generated on the topic and the exponential interest of all the stakeholders (including the federal government), the loss to society is predicted to be catastrophic. This general session panel will examine the ways in which Year 2000 may create havoc within the insurance and reinsurance industry.

What are insurance companies' strategies to mitigate the risk of Year 2000? Insurance companies face not only the risk of their own systems' failures (as well as their outside providers'), but are also exposed to insurance liability emanating from the policies they write. The panelists will overview the underwriting exposures and pricing considerations, and discuss those lines of business that may be particularly hard-hit with Year 2000 losses.

How does Year 2000 affect reinsurers differently than primary companies? Do their portfolios have built-in systemic risks? And let's not forget about the lawyers: Year 2000 has been a breeding ground for newly emerging legal liabilities, a topic that the panel will be covering. This panel has been studying the Year 2000 for some time and will shed new light on this hot topic.
