We are very pleased with the enthusiastic response to the first announcement of the
overlapping 32nd ASTIN Colloquium, July 8-11, 2001, and Casualty Actuaries in
Reinsurance Seminar (CARe), July 11-12, 2001, which will be held in Washington,
D.C. We wish to thank those who have expressed their intention to attend the
Colloquium and Seminar and who have provided us with useful information for
planning this joint meeting.
This second announcement contains the details of the Colloquium and Seminar
program and the registration form.
This meeting marks the first occasion of a joint meeting with ASTIN and the CAS.
Joint sessions on Wednesday, July 11 are an opportunity for participants in both
events to attend sessions of mutual interest. Additional information on the CARe
Seminar will be mailed separately in May.
The Colloquium will consist of some general sessions and several concurrent sessions.
The papers will be presented by the authors and discussed in the concurrent sessions.
There will also be several health and genetics presentations.
During the discussion, the authors may elaborate on the technical aspects and the
methodology applied to their research and present further developments. We hope
that this will initiate a lively debate and that we can explore new frontiers of actuarial
studies in the field of general insurance.
Two types of CARe sessions will be offered: reinsurance research and standard
concurrent presentations. Reinsurance research sessions will include the presentation
of papers, the topic of which is "Using Dynamic Financial Analysis to Structure
Reinsurance Programs and to Select Optimal Retention Levels." There will also be
"Research Corners," which are designed for the presentation of ideas in their early
stages of development on a wide variety of topics.
Other CARe sessions tend to have a very practical orientation. They include panels of
speakers sharing their insights on the marketplace and discussing the work they do.
The presentations are targeted for actuaries whose job is to apply their technical
knowledge to make business decisions concerning the pricing, underwriting, and
financial reporting of reinsurance contracts. These sessions will discuss new products
and recent trends in loss emergence for various lines of business. Most seminars will
also discuss the different methods actuaries use to analyze various classes of business.
Washington, D.C. is an exciting city. The excursions we are proposing for participants
and accompanying persons will offer the opportunity to enjoy the city's historic and
cultural attractions.
At a time when technology enables fast and efficient communications, it is very
important to rediscover the true meaning of the Colloquium: a meeting point without
boundaries, in a friendly atmosphere, for professionals who share the same interests.
Sincerely,
