Welcome
2000 CAS Annual Meeting
November 12-15, 2000
Washington, D.C.
The 2000 Annual Meeting of the Casualty Actuarial Society will be held November 12-15 at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C. This meeting provides an opportunity for actuaries to learn about current developments impacting the insurance industry and their profession, as well as an opportunity to interact with actuaries from around the globe.

The featured speaker is George Will, one of America’s leading political observers. His speech, Public Affairs, Public Policy and American Society, is an engrossing analysis of current politics and economic policy. Mr. Will is seen weekly on ABC’s This Week and read nationally in his Newsweek and syndicated columns. As our meeting will be only one week past the general election in November, Mr. Will’s comments and observations will be timely.

There will be four general sessions, the first of which “Product Distribution in a Changing Business Environment,” will explore how insurance companies and insurance brokers are positioning themselves for Internet development. Multiple general sessions will also be offered on Tuesday morning. These general sessions will include “Auto Safety, Engineering and Insurance – As We Begin the 21st Century,” a review of the interrela-tionships among some of the factors affecting auto insurance costs, and “Financial Services Modernization: Information vs. Privacy Issues,” a discussion of recent attempts to safeguard consumer privacy in dealings with insurers. Lastly, the general session “Worshipping at the Altar of Shareholder Value” will explore the implications of management’s focus on shareholder value concept for property/casualty insurers.

Concurrent sessions being planned include “Task Force on Securitization,” “Earnings Management,” “Ratemaking in an e-World,” “View from Overseas,” “The Actuary’s Role in Due Diligence,” “Current Trends in D&O and E&O Insurance,” “Prescription Drugs and the Workers Compensation System,” “Statements of Actuarial Opinion and ASOP 36,” “New Classes of Claims,” and a series of case studies presented by the CAS External Communications Committee. In addition, there will be limited attendance workshops that focus on developing general business skills. On Tuesday evening, members and guests are invited to join us at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum for a buffet dinner.

Registration forms for the meeting and the Marriott hotel, as well as details on the proposed sessions, are enclosed in this preliminary program. Please keep in mind that this is still the preliminary program and the published speakers and scheduled events are subject to change.

Please note that the CAS registration fee will be refunded for cancellations received in writing on or before November 6, less a $50 administrative fee. The fee will increase for registrations not received by October 30. Since the hotel cut-off date is October 19, we suggest you return the enclosed hotel reservation form as soon as possible. Information regarding the airline and car rental discounts is also enclosed.

Sincerely,

David R. Chernick
