RESNET Guidelines and Disclaimer

  1. Purpose
    The purpose of the list is to foster communications between those interested in casualty actuarial science. An email list is essentially an extension of face-to-face meetings, where people can ask each other for advice on casualty issues, the exam process, research topics, and other items of common interest. We encourage all subscribers to post requests for information, as well as helpful information related to the casualty actuarial profession. This list is for the open discussion of issues relating to casualty actuarial science.
  2. Plain Text Only Please -- No Rich Text Format or HTML Messages
    Posts to the list should be text-only, no RTF or HTML mail. Sending a formatted message makes the message unreadable for some subscribers, especially those on digest subscriptions. Check your settings and choose "plain text". Every email program has a way to do this.

  3. Do Not Send Email Attachments
    Instead, provide the data as text in your post, give a link to a website where the information can be found, or offer to provide the data to those who request it.
  4. Include a Short, but Explanatory Subject Line
    Additionally, if you must post a long message, warn the other subscribers with a statement in the subject line or in the body of the message at the top. Examples: (Long) or Warning - Long Message.
  5. Keep your Email Address Current
    It is your responsibility to make sure that your address is up to date. If your mail continues to "bounce" the list, your email address will be removed.
  6. No Vacation/Out of Office Messages
    If you are leaving the office, do not send automatic "out of office replies" to RESNET. You may wish to unsubscribe from the list while you are out and re-subscribe upon your return.
  7. Keep your messages short and trim
    When replying to a message, quote only the portion absolutely necessary to help the reader understand your response. Delete the rest. If quoting an article, include only a brief excerpt and then provide the URL where those interested may view the rest. On ALL replies, be certain to eliminate all automatically generated footers (RESNET, Yahoo, MSN mail, and others) from the referenced previous post as well as trimming email system headers and extra signature lines. Delete any non-essential text. Do Not re-send a digest to the list.
  8. No "me too's" Allowed
    If your reply is simply a request to receive a copy of what someone has offered to share, or simply to agree with someone (e.g. "Me too"), do not reply to the entire group. Note that the reply is set to automatically go to the entire list. Please review your recipients before you send your message.
  9. Do Not Request Return Receipts
    There's the possibility all RESNET members could reply and you could receive hundreds of receipts! Additionally, it is a nuisance to other list members.
  10. Play Nice
    This is a discussion list. Express your opinions. Feel free to question the opinions and information presented by others. However, please do not challenge or attack others, only ideas. If you have a differing opinion, please feel free to support your opinion or comments. All will learn and benefit from well-thought out responses to a situation or question.

    Additionally, do not post any defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive or illegal materials.
  11. No Marketing
    Please refrain from sending "commercial" and/or self-promotional postings to the list. The proper forum for posting such an announcement is the Career Center on the CAS Web Site. The Career Center has options for job postings as well as advertising opportunities.
  12. Confidentiality
    Though all list members have registered with their real names, this information is ordinarily considered confidential and list members may post messages to the list anonymously. However, CAS employees and officers are authorized to access your registration information on a case by case basis to investigate complaints or other allegations of abuse and may reveal your name in special situations. Unless anonymity is desired, please remember to include your name, and optionally, your company name, at the end of your message. This will help identify you to the people who read your message.

    Any communication or material transmitted via this Internet email list is on a non-confidential basis with no promise by the CAS not to use such communication or material for any purpose whatsoever, including reproduction, publication, broadcast and posting.
  13. Use of copyrighted material
    Do not post any information or other material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner. By posting material, the posting party warrants and represents that it owns the copyright with respect to such material or has received permission from the copyright owner. In addition, the posting party grants CAS and users of this list the non-exclusive right and license to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit, print and use such information or other material.
  14. Disclaimers
    All policies of the CAS, including the CAS Policy and Guidelines for Antitrust Compliance, apply to the use of this email list. The CAS is committed to adhering strictly to the letter and spirit of the antitrust laws and the basic antitrust rules for CAS members described in the CAS Policy and Guidelines for Antitrust Compliance.

    This list is provided as a service of the CAS and interested parties. CAS accepts no responsibility for the opinions and information posted on this list by others. CAS disclaims all warranties with regard to information posted on this list, whether posted by CAS or any third party; this disclaimer includes all implied warranties of merchantability and fitness. In no event shall CAS be liable for any special, indirect or consequential damages or any damages whatsoever resulting from loss of use, data or profits, arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of any information posted on this list.

    CAS does not actively monitor the list for inappropriate postings, and does not on its own undertake editorial control of postings. However, in the event that any inappropriate posting is brought to the CAS's attention, CAS will take all appropriate action. CAS reserves the right to terminate access to any user who does not abide by these guidelines for a minimum of 30 days.
