Catastrophic Events on September 11, 2001

September 14, 2001

To: CAS Members, Candidates, and Friends

We want to express our deep sympathy and best wishes to the families and friends of those directly impacted or as yet unaccounted for as a result of the catastrophic events on September 11th. Our hearts also go out to the many people who narrowly escaped.

We would like to share information the CAS has obtained so far regarding CAS members whose offices were located in One and Two World Trade Center. We must note that the following information has not been directly verified by the CAS and unfortunately does not include the many casualty actuarial professionals who are not CAS members.

Records at the CAS Office, which may not reflect recent moves, indicate that a total of 36 CAS members worked in offices of the following firms in One and Two World Trade Center:

Fireman's Fund McGee
Guy Carpenter & Company
Kemper Insurance Companies
MMC Enterprise Risk Consulting
SCOR Reinsurance

Unofficial sources have indicated that all but one of the CAS members at these firms have been safely accounted for. The one who is not yet accounted for (as of September 14th) is Philip D. Miller (FCAS 1975) of Aon Risk Consultants.

Several people have posted information in the Water Cooler section of the Discussion Forum of the CAS Web Site regarding our colleagues employed in the World Trade Center buildings, including CAS members, exam candidates and others. We have established a new section in the Discussion Forum to facilitate sharing further information of this type. Although the CAS gives no assurance of the accuracy of this information, we hope this forum will be helpful.
